Known for pop culture references, fast-paced dialogue, homages to classic films, and unpredictable scenes of violence. In 1990, he worked for Cinetel production company where one of the producers put his script for 'True Romance' into the hands of director Tony Scott. Working with producer Lawrence Bender, he found funding for his directorial debut of his script 'Reservoir Dogs'. This independent film became popular on video in the US and overseas. 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) was a major commercial and critical success. It earned $108 million at the box office, the first independent film to do so.

Known for dark themes, unsympathetic lead characters, religion, the Mafia, unusual camera techniques and contemporary music. Childhood asthma forced him to stay inside watching TV and movies, while drawing his own storyboards for fun. Completed his first film at 26 after studying at NYU. Met longtime collaborators actor Harvey Keitel and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Hailed as a living movie legend very early in his career. About the violence he shows in his work: "Deep down you want to think that people are really good- but the reality outweighs that.".
