Weka Workshop

Weka was founding in 1987 with co-founder and co-directors Tania Rodger and Richard Taylor. They wanted to create a practical-effects studio that would support NZ film. They made 70 puppets for Gibson groups 'Public Eye' in 1988. It was satire based on UK's 'Spitting Image'. Taylor got the job by turning photos of the producer into a spitting image-style puppet and leaving it on the office desk with his card on top. The producer called Taylor and told him that he had the job but didn't need to bother with the puppet because he was the only applicant. Weka then started collaborating with model-making enthusiast and film-maker Peter Jackson, who had just finished 'Bad Taste'.
