Known for making provocative films about race relations, political issues, and urban crime and violence. He has created, 'She's Gotta Have It' (1986), 'Do the Right Thing' (1989), 'BlacKkKlansman' (2018), '4 Little Girls' (doc) (1997), and 'When the Levees Broke: A Requieum in 4 Acts' (doc) (2006).
Oscar nominations; 'BlacKkKlansman' (2019) for Best Adapted Screenplay (winner), Best Director and Best Picture. '4 Little Girls' (1998) for Best Documentary Feature. 'Do the Right Thing' (1990) for Best Original Screenplay and Academy Honorary Award (2015) winner.
Ava Duvernay (1972 - )
Known for making films and documentaries about the Black experience in America, criminal justice system, advocating for disruption of the traditional film industry. She has created 'This is the Life' (2008), 'Selma' (2014), '13th' (doc) (2016), 'A Wrinkle in Time' (2018), 'When They See Us' (2019).
